Story:

4 girls - Juniper, Yui, Bea, and Vivian, together form the newest pop band Sour Candy. Fresh out of college and each struggling to find their way, this eccentric group of friends united through their love of making music. Together, the girls endure the turmoils of personal change, navigating their 20s, and their own inner doubts as they pursue their passions.

Juniper “Jun-Hee” Seong

Juniper is the kind of girl you picture fronting a band; bright, charismatic, and a little childish. From the time she was young she loved music and performance, taking up guitar in middle school and doing community theater off and on. Her greatest love is being on stage (and just maybe a little bit getting to have some attention). Though under that confidence lies a layer of insecurity, especially now post college and facing post grad choice paralysis. Despite her self-doubt and worries for the future, Juniper is always the eternal optimist. Vowing to not let her life be dictated by outside pressures, she wants to choose a life for herself she finds true fulfillment in. Sour Candy was originally her brainchild, and she recruited the other girls because she saw the same spark in each of them (plus she just loves her friends, but who doesn’t).

Guitarist/Vocals

Yui Nakamura

Yui is a deeply serious person; she is Juniper’s opposite in the best ways. Yui and Juniper met on their first day of kindergarten and have been best friends ever since. She often plays the straight man in many situations, not necessarily because she wants to but because she feels she must. Despite her blunt and intimidating aura, she’s a loyal friend and cares deeply for the people in her life. She’s always been described as an overachiever, but to her overachieving is the standard. Her love for the bass came from her parents putting her in multiple activities as a kid, and playing the bass just stuck. She is also quite a bit of a poet, using writing poetry as a means of expressing the emotions she has trouble verbalizing. Much of her poetry has become the basis of Sour Candy’s lyrics.

Bassist/Lyricist

Beatrice “Bea” Flores-Mendoza

Bea is the type of person you’d expect to be a drummer in a band- chill, kind, and deeply intuitive. Originally from Southern California, she came to the East Coast for college where she and Juniper met freshman year. They two were random roommates but quickly became close friends. She is the most personable member of the group, but her peacekeeper nature often leads to her having to play the mediator and if she slips into bad habits sometimes even being a pushover. She picked up drumming in high school after she was introduced to it by a family friend as a way to vent emotions through music. Her other great love however is fashion- whether thrifting or making her own clothes, Bea loves to express herself through clothes. She is the most supportive of the idea of Sour Candy, seeing how much the idea of a band ignites her friends.

Drummer

Vivian Li

Vivian is what you would picture if a deer became a human girl. Timid and sheepish, a lifetime of pressure has left her a shell of a former performer. Vivian grew up in the same town as Juniper and Yui, and the three were friends throughout their school years. As a child she was a piano prodigy, gaining local notoriety for her skills, but her career ended abruptly after her freshman year of college where she snapped, crashing out so hard so vowed to never touch the piano again. Despite her trauma she still has a deep love of the arts, still participating in hobbies like painting. However with some convincing from Juniper, Vivian agreed to return to the piano to join Sour Candy and with help from her friends regain her love for piano playing.

Sour Candy’s 1st Extended Play (EP) - “We Are Sour Candy”

Sour Candy presents their first EP “We Are Sour Candy”, imagined as an album release. Inspired by Japanese and Korean musical packaging “We Are Sour Candy” seeks to create a visual identify for the group while creating fun inclusions for consumers to receive alongside their purchase of the music.

The outbox invokes imagery of a candy book and even features the album’s track list as the “nutrition facts”. The CD balances practicality and style making it useful to play but also fun to display. The accordion style lyric booklet is decorated with snappy hand designed fonts and icons. A staple of the East Asian pop music industry, “We Are Sour Candy” features 4 collectable photo cards of each member holding a stuffed animal of their designated animal for fans to collect and trade.

Additional merchandise includes cute stickers of each member and a poster from the group’s first tour “The Pucker Up” Tour.
